TBRI for Foster and Adoptive Parents in San Angelo, TX
Foster and adoptive parents in San Angelo are some of the most motivated, caring people I have ever worked with. They have opened their homes to children who have experienced loss, neglect, abuse, or instability — and they are committed to making it work. But commitment alone is not always enough.
Children who come from hard places carry their history in their bodies and their behavior. They may flinch at raised voices, shut down when asked a direct question, or respond to ordinary correction with explosive anger. These are not character flaws. They are adaptations — survival strategies that made sense in a previous environment but create friction in a safe one.
Trust-Based Relational Intervention, or TBRI, was developed at Texas Christian University specifically to address the needs of children from hard places. It is built on three sets of principles: Empowering Principles that address physical and sensory needs, Connecting Principles that build felt safety and attachment, and Correcting Principles that redirect behavior without shame or fear.
What makes TBRI different from most parenting frameworks is that it starts with the relationship, not the behavior. Before you can correct a child effectively, they need to feel safe with you. Before they can feel safe, they need consistent, predictable responses from the adults in their life. TBRI gives caregivers the tools to build that foundation.
As a certified TBRI Practitioner, I offer training for foster and adoptive families in San Angelo. Sessions are individualized — we work through the principles in the context of your specific children and your specific challenges. This is not a lecture. It is a working conversation.
If you are a foster or adoptive parent who feels like you are doing everything right and still hitting a wall, TBRI may be the missing piece. I would be glad to talk about what that training looks like and whether it might help your family.
